If your Super 8 or 16mm reels have been sitting in a garage or attic, the two enemies working against them are heat and humidity — not time itself. A little care before scan day makes a measurable difference in what comes off the reel.
Do this
- Move reels to a cool, dry, dark space — a closet inside the air-conditioned part of the house beats a garage every time.
- Store them upright in their original canisters rather than stacked flat.
- Keep them away from exterior walls, water heaters, and anything that swings between hot and cold.
Don't do this
- Don't unspool a reel to "check" it — the film is more fragile than it looks, and handling is often what causes tears, not storage.
- Don't seal reels in airtight plastic bins; trapped moisture accelerates chemical breakdown.
- Don't run an unknown reel through a vintage projector you're not sure is aligned.
One warning sign to act on
If a reel smells sharp or vinegary when opened, that's an early sign of vinegar syndrome — get it scanned sooner rather than later, since the process accelerates once it starts.
